The Best Thing with Sliced Bread: Round 1 results
The first round of the Best Thing with Sliced Bread has wrapped up, and the first leg of the competition has set the bar high for what’s to come.
Delicious mystery box
All three bloggers received a mystery box containing a loaf of Blue Ribbon Low GI White Bread, a tin of artichokes, crème fraiche, eggs, mixed fresh peppers and sweet basil. The bloggers were given one week to complete the challenge, and create one indulgent appetiser. The results were delicious.
Semenya put his professional training to good use, whipping up a fine-dining dish. The qualified chef created a mouth-watering stack of Blue Ribbon bruschetta, topped with artichoke pesto, roast peppers, basil mayonnaise and poached-to-perfection egg. The dish was presented as a haute cuisine starter.
“Lesego played around with the ingredients wonderfully, and pushed the boundaries with texture and yumminess appeal,” says judge Anna Montali.
Bresler imbued her dish with Cape Town style, serving up a chic plate of savoury French toast slices with sautéed peppers and artichokes, all topped with dollops of crème fraiche.
“It’s not the easiest thing to create an incredible dish using so few ingredients – Candice managed to do this with her colourful, fresh recipe,” comments Montali.
Anina Meyer channelled the flavours of the Mediterranean with her sultry, tapas-inspired creation. She served up crispy artichoke hearts and Melba toast with pepper Panzanella – punchy, fresh flavours and an inspired take on the mystery ingredients.
Impressed by the innovative use of ingredients, Montali dubbed Meyer’s the Dish of the Month. “Anina’s dish was creative and colourful, with bold flavours. Panzanella is a traditional Italian bread salad, and Anina served it up with a twist – I really liked this.”
Meyer takes home a R1000 Yuppichef voucher for her win, but all contestants remain in the running for the ultimate title, ‘The Best thing with Sliced Bread’ – and the ultimate prize of a R10 000 Yuppiechef voucher.
